According to The Ocean Cleanup, the Great Pacific Garbage Patch takes up 1.6 million square kilometers, equating to roughly twice the size of Texas, or three times the size of France. Researchers also conclude animals like sea turtles and fish commonly confuse plastic bags for squid or other prey, resulting in consumption and more deaths of these species than ever seen before.
